Alexander McDowell McCook (1831-1903) was born in Columbiana County, Ohio, to Daniel and Martha Latimer McCook. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1852. During the Civil War, he organized the 1st Ohio Volunteer Infantry regiment. The McCook Family of Carroll County of Ohio were nicknamed "The Fighting McCooks" because of their service during the Civil War.
